English words in Czech language

314 Czechlish Is Real—and It’s Helping You Learn Czech Faster by Maruška

How Much Czech Do You Already Know (Thanks to English)? 😍

If you speak English, you already know a lot of Czech words. Really. Words like tramvaj, zoomuju, meeting, or scrolluju? Yep—welcome to modern, real-life Czech!

In this fun episode, slowczech tutor Maruska invites you into her (very Czech, very relatable) day. But here’s the twist: her Czech is full of English-inspired words you already know! Words like:

  • meeting

  • zoomuju

  • scrolluju

  • chilluju

Through Maruska’s casual storytelling, you’ll hear how English blends into everyday Czech. You’ll hear what a “normal Czech day” sounds like. You’ll laugh. You’ll learn. And most importantly—you’ll understand way more than you expected. No pressure, just listening and letting the Czech language slowly soak in.

This is the kind of listening that builds confidence, makes you smile, and helps you finally feel like Czech is not that scary. Whether you’re just starting or you’ve been struggling to speak Czech fluently, this episode will show you that you’re already closer than you think.

Transcript of the episode comes today with a fun twist.. try to fill in the gaps!

Ahoj, tady Maruška. Dneska pro tebe mám téma angličtina v češtině. Umíš anglicky? To je super, protože automaticky znáš hodně českých slov. Třeba tramvaj. Pomerančový džus. Googlovat?

Kolega sharuje slidy a diskutujeme a debatujeme. Po meetingu si dám pauzu. Uf, udělám si capuccino a scrolluju na Instagramu, chilluju a ignoruju emaily. Můj ex Petr postnul cool fotku z Mexika.

Moje ………………… Markéta, Markéta je super. Pracuje jako grafička v IT firmě. Je ………….. kreativní. Pracuje tam taky Helena …………….. manažerka. Helena je super organizovaná a ambiciózní. A její partner Tomáš je bankéř, trochu workoholik. Pořád pracuje. Lucka pracuje v alternativní škole jako asistentka a její partner Jiří studuje medicínu. Chce být doktor. Možná přijde ……………. Lenka.

Musím ještě exportovat data do PDF, poslat feedback grafikovi zeditovat to video. Hmm, tak jo. To byl můj den.

Možná máš ………………., byla to normální čeština? Nebylo to trochu divný? Trochu bizarní? Nebyla.

Napiš do komentáře, co rozumíš, nerozumíš, co budeš používat. Tak jo, čau, čau.

Tak jak to šlo? Máš vyplněná všechna slova?

Interesting tidbit: the illustration below depicts a “táborák”, a beloved tradition in Czechia. Friends and families gather around a campfire to relax, chat, grill buřty, and sip beer.

With slowczech, we aim to provide you with a similar atmosphere: a warm, welcoming space to meet fellow learners and practice your Czech in a no-pressure setting. Enjoy! :)
